I so love that: "If the storyteller is skilled, though, and the reader’s heart is softened, then they will soon trust one another, and the anticipation to interact with the various differing minds within the story will encourage deeper participation in the tale." Any kind of art is a like a trust pact between the artist and the viewer.
Absolutely, and I think it's one of those things that's impossible for an artist to achieve within a project -- there's a certain 'reaching out' one can do with skilled artistry, and from there, I think one will have to trust the right viewer to reach the rest of the way ... Thanks so much for reading!
How true! Some guidance may be necessary, but maybe even not. Viewers are smart. And I often critique, well mostly to self and family and friends, how much handholding there is in gaming. Like those who create the games do not trust us to figure it out. But to truly engage with art a viewer needs to actively participate.
That's a really great point, and it might describe one of the biggest failings of most modern institutes of education -- a lack of the kind of games you're describing in the study of literature and creative writing ...
Alas, it is more common to create entertainment that is easy. But it is more rewarding to reflect and work a bit to get something even if it may not feel that way at first.
I love your depth of understanding and the ease with which you cover this POV issue, Pete. I hope you continue to find joy and satisfaction in your writing. :) Val
